Headteacher’s Message
Dear families,
What an exciting last week of the term: we have had the Year 6 residential, a wonderful but emotional Leavers’ Service and a visit from former prime minister Rishi Sunak. We have definitely finished the academic year off in style!
As you know, we won’t be using the West Burton site next year. Children from Reception to Year 6 who are registered at West Burton will be able to travel to Askrigg or Bainbridge on our shuttle bus. However, please could you make sure they arrive at the West Burton site no later than 08:30am. A member of staff will be on site at West Burton from 08:20. At the end of the day, your children will arrive back at the West Burton site at 15:30 so they can meet the home-school transport.
I also wanted to let you know that lunch prices will increase slightly next term from £3.00 to £3.10. This is because the cost to the school for each meal is rising to £4.14 per meal (it is currently £3.97). We are able to continue subsidising meals to support parents but we do need to factor in the rising cost of food. If you have any concerns about this, please get in touch on v.collins@b-a-wb.co.uk.
As there is no Celebration Assembly this week, I wanted to celebrate the achievements of one of our Year 1 pupils. She had a trial for the Richmondshire Dales Swimming Club and has been offered a place on their Skills 1 Squad. This squad is normally only for 8-year-olds and above but Lexi really impressed everyone with her skills and they have made an exception for her. This is a remarkable feat Lexi, well done!
Finally, best of luck to our Year 6 children and to Harry and Seth from Year 5 and Year 1 who are all moving onto new schools. I look forward to welcoming our other children back on Tuesday 3rd September. I hope you all have a wonderful summer holiday.
PTFA Message
The PTFA would like to say a huge thank you for all your support this year. Most recently for last week’s car boot sale which raised around £750. Thank you to everyone who helped, had a stall, baked beautiful cakes or came along to buy. We want the PTFA to be something all families want to get behind and support so please fill in our survey to help us know how you feel about it HERE.
We already have a couple of dates for September for you!
Sunday 15 September – fun run at Askrigg School
Thursday 19 September – tour of the newly refurbished annex at 6:30-7:00 followed by the PTFA AGM at 7:00-7:30. This will give you an idea of what we’ve achieved over the last year and is when this year’s committee steps down and the committee for the following year is elected. Please come along!

Day in the Dales
Day-in-the-Dales-posterRobins
The reception Robins should have come home with their own lovely Spider plant that they have planted themselves. They are the ‘babies’ from the big Spider plant that Mrs Pickard-Sparne gave us at the beginning of the year. We have enjoyed watching it grow and have enjoyed watching our reception Robins grow too!
It has been a lovely week for enjoying our favourite things about being in Robins and we have been sharing our favourite memories during PSHE. We have also tried to make the most of playing in the big playground, playing in the water and making ‘jumps’ and obstacle courses in our own outdoor area.
The children LOVED playing board games later in the week. Their favourite game (and Mrs Middletons!) was ‘Giraffes in Scarves’.
Owls
A busy last week for the Owls.
We worked with the volunteers to create our entries for the Askrigg Produce Show, some wonderful portraits have been created using a range of media.
In DT we put our cutting skills into practice again and created our fruit salads, lots of clean plates and positive evaluations afterwards!
We joined the Robins to say farewell to Mrs Middleton and Mrs Parkinson and present them with their cards and gifts. Thank you for all of the fun and excitement you have brought to the Robins and Owls, we are really going to miss you in September. We wish Mrs Middleton luck in her next exciting chapter and hope Mrs Parkinson enjoys lots of time with her grandchildren.
Sadly we say goodbye to Seth today as he prepares to move to his new school in September, he will be greatly missed by all of the staff and children but we know he will have a wonderful time at his new school who are very lucky to have him join them. We hope the Owls have a lovely summer and wish them well as they move into year 2. We have loved watching them grow over the past year, thank you for making it such fun Owls.
Swallows and Kingfishers
We have had a fun week in the Swallows and Kingfishers! We have been playing bingo, making word searches and have had (multiple!) picture quizzes! On Thursday afternoon, we had a games afternoon which was a lovely opportunity to finish the year off with some fun with friends!
Golden Eagles
After a restful weekend, the Golden Eagles have had a fantastic final week. In science we finished our topic on the digestive system by making a paper model of the digestive system and also by getting our hands dirty by simulating the different parts of the digestive system.
In RE, the Golden Eagles had a silent discussion on prayer, looking at different prayers and writing their thoughts and feelings around them.
On Thursday, we had a computing day, investigating, modifying, designing and evaluating scratch games.
A great end to a wonderful year.
Herons
The Herons had a fabulous day at Aysgarth Falls, investigating woodland habitats and river dipping to find invertebrates.
By identifying the creatures found in the water, we were able to conclude that the water at Aysgarth is pretty clean!
Merlins
What a wonderful final week our Merlins have had. The children had a fab time at Humphrey Head, and spent their week kayaking, canoeing, doing bushcraft, orienteering and of course, making up dance routines!
It has been a pleasure watching my year six children grow and flourish this past year. They are all so amazing and special in their own way and I will miss them all greatly. Goodbye year six and good luck for the future – Miss Telford.
