Headteacher’s Message

Dear families,

It has felt very Autumnal this week and the schools are looking particularly beautiful with the changing colours. Our children have continued to enjoyed lots of outdoor learning and exercise, whatever the weather. This has included much fun on our new bike track at Bainbridge (please see photos below). The track is perfect for young children who are just learning to handle their bikes and has proved a huge hit! Many thanks to all the parents and families who made this possible with their donations, it is a wonderful legacy. I am currently talking to NYC’s health and safety team about how we can open up this facility to the wider community – more to follow in future weeks.

A couple of little reminders for you all:

  • On Thursday 19th September, parents (and their children) are welcome to come along to Askrigg School at 18:30 to have a look round our new classrooms in the Annexe, with an opportunity to also meet our lovely PTFA and attend their AGM. I look forward to seeing many of you there.
  • On Sunday 13th October, we will be holding a BAWB Fun Run – all welcome! Please click here to sign up (apologies to those of you who were unable to access the form last week, the fault has now been corrected).

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Y6 Residential

We are pleased to say that we have booked next year’s residential at East Barnby. The children will be staying for two nights/three days from the 23rd June – 25th June 2025 at a cost of £270. We have decided on a shorter residential this year, so we can also engage in adventure activities with local providers.

The payment item will be assigned on ParentPay to those taking part in the trip and can be paid either in a lump sum or in instalments. If you anticipate difficulties in paying for the residential, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Miss Collins directly and in confidence on [email protected]

Upper Wensleydale Benefice – ‘Pathfinders’ Family Sponsored Walk and Burger! – 22nd September 2024 – 3:15-5pm

We hope that you might be able to join with us for our annual sponsored walk around beautiful Semerwater. Last year we raised over £100 for our chosen charity ‘Cancer Research’ and it would be lovely to raise something similar for them once more.

The walk will start and finish at St Matthew’s Church in Stalling Busk. Stout shoes / walking boots are required along with waterproof clothing. Burgers served as we arrive back in Busk.

Robins

Another fantastic week in the Robins!

We have had a go at pattern matching this week in preparation for starting our maths topic next week. As you can see, the children are already excellent at it!

Balancing has been a big hit in Robins this week- we are using our arms to help us balance and making sure we look where we are going!

The Robins have been discussing our emotions this week by reading stories and talking about how things make us feel. We have been working hard on trying to be empathetic towards each other.

… and other exciting things too!

Owls

In PE the Owls have started their second unit ‘Games for Understanding’, learning about attack and defence.

In science we asked this question ‘Do the oldest children have the longest feet? I was very impressed by the discussions that took place about why or why not the children thought this was true, everyone gave examples to support their answer.  We then measured and compared the size of the children’s feet. Ask an Owl what we discovered!
In art the Owls have been exploring spirals, next week we will be using a range of media to create spiral snails!
In history we are learning about chronology and timelines, starting with sequencing daily routines.

Swallows

The Swallows have continued learning about different animals and their needs for survival and were very excited by the fish caught by Mr Scrafton’s brother although perhaps not as excited as Mrs Martin’s dog who kindly disposed of it!

In PE Mr Bullock was very impressed with the Swallows ability to apply pressure to an attacking player in football.

The Swallows have already started making preparations for the Harvest Festival which will take place on Friday 4th October at St Andrew’s church.

Golden Eagles

The Golden Eagles have a fantastic second week back!  We have started our music lessons with Miss Mortimer from North Yorkshire Council Music Services.  She introduced us to our clarinets which we will be starting to learn to play next week.
We have also been learning about Invertebrates in Science and went on a bug hunt in the Forest Schools area to see what different species we could find there.  We found lots of spiders, insects and soft-bodied invertebrates such as snails and worms.

Herons

The Herons have had a busy week!

We really enjoyed our art lesson this week. We were tasked with making our own font type. Here we can see two nature themed fonts.
This week we also had our first Clarinet lesson where we found out the names for each section and what their role is.
In PE this week we worked on developing our skills for football, looking at passing and moving. We made some great progress in just one lesson.
In history we have been looking at Vikings we revisited our timelines from week 1, before making inferences about life as a Viking in Britain by looking at a database of sources.

Merlins

In French, the Merlins have been looking at different Olympic sports and practising how to say them. We were able to recognise the correct verb ‘joue’ or ‘fais’ when talking about the different sports. Using our knowledge of cognates and near cognates, we were able to identify French adjectives and build sentences about our sport preferences which included the correct verb and an adjective. We finished the lesson with a translating game, we explored the different French guests that were stuck up around the room and were able to translate and answer questions about their sporting preference.

In science, the Merlins have been learning about animal classification and grouping. We looked first, at vertebrates and how we could group those animals further. We looked at mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish and the features animals needed to be grouped into the different categories. We explored classification by grouping sweets based on their features – we also had a great time eating them!
