Headteacher’s Message

It has been a busy week this week with Remembrance Services on Monday, Odd Socks Day on Tuesday and, of course, Children in Need today. The children decided that we would have a ‘Comfy Clothes’ day for this latter event which many of the staff were very excited about. How nice to wear our most comfortable outfits for the day!

I wanted to let you all know that Christingle will take place in school this year, rather than in church. This is due to difficulty in finding a suitable time when the church is available. Unfortunately, this means that we won’t be able to invite parents to join us this year but we do look forward to seeing you at our nativity services at St Oswald’s in Askrigg on the 12th and 13th December.

The staff are also looking forward to some training next week as part of our work with ‘Partners in Neurodiversity (PiNS)’. This project is proving invaluable for us and I thought it would be good to make you all aware that they can also provide support for parents. One of the partners in this project, called KIDS Family Support Online, provides group workshops for parents and carers led by an experienced Family Support Specialist. It is also possible to access 1:1 sessions with a Family Support Specialist Advisor. To find out more, please visit KIDS Family Support or email familysupport@kids.org.uk.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Armistice Day

On Monday the Askrigg children walked into Askrigg for an act of remembrance. Our Year 6 children lead the remembrance with thoughtful poems they had written and everyone stood silently at 11am to remember all those who have given their lives in the pursuit of peace. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

Children in Need!

We’ve had a wonderful day at BAWB, doing lots of activities for Children in Need! Children did some crafts, followed by a very energetic dancing session! Mrs Teasdale showed off her best moves!

School Councillors at Askrigg baked some yummy biscuits yesterday, which all of the children iced this morning. Mrs Martin had the very important task of choosing her favourite from each class – those who won got to take home a jar of Fearne and Rosie jam, kindly donated by one of our wonderful parents, Rachel.

Serious discussions taking place!

Pudsey Bear also made an appearance at Bainbridge – the children were VERY EXCITED as you can imagine! Even Mrs Harrison went in for a cuddle!

Robins

Reception Robins went on a shape hunt around the school looking for squares and rectangles. We decided the bench was a rectangle and had a lovely group photo on it!

Nursery have been listening out for 1,2,3,4,5 in Maths and we stood on numbers and matched the numicon to the numeral!

Some of our nursery Robins had a lovely picnic this week. They made sure they had everything they needed from the home corner before setting off on their lovely day out!

Owls

On Monday the Robins and Owls placed poppies on the tree at the front of Bainbridge to symbolise remembrance before we observed the 2 minutes silence.

In science the owls have been observing and comparing rocks, using lots of wonderful words to describe them……rough, smooth, heavy, sparkly, stripey.  We also looked at some pebbles talking about how they had become smooth. Some of the owls talked about rock formation too, very impressive!

In geography this week we continued to look at maps, this time we made ‘messy maps’ of the classroom, using classroom resources to create tables, book corners, shelves. There were some very creative ideas, producing great maps.

Swallows

The Swallows have had a fantastic week in and out of the classroom (making use of the wonderfully unseasonable weather).

In computing at the end of last week we thought about our digital 5 a day and the different ways we can use IT and be mindful about our use of IT. The children used dance videos to keep active, sound buttons to record kind messages to each other, took photographs (always asking permission first) to stay connected, created digital art to be creative and thought about ways that they could control their use of IT.

On Tuesday we had a photography day as part of our new computing unit of work. The Swallows learnt about different devices for taking photographs, when to use portrait or landscape and how to frame a photograph. Could we have the next Chris Packham in our class?

Golden Eagles

In English, we had to describe how a character was feeling without saying the words, just describing actions and facial expressions.

We have been practising scoring, cutting and folding accurately. Then our castle tower should stick together with stability and strength.

Herons

The Herons have had a busy week. We really enjoyed our basketball lesson working on dribbling. We worked on using our body to give us an advantage over the defenders.

In English we have enjoyed our new book ‘The Promise’ we have been thinking about creating our own version of this fantastic story.
We enjoyed learning a new song in clarinet and developing our Musical skills. In science we have been looking at the solar system and learning about how our thoughts about the solar system have changed over time from geocentric to heliocentric.

Merlins

What a fun-filled week in the Merlins!

in science, we started our new topic, ‘Electricity’. We recapped the symbols for components within a circuit and sketched them into our books. We used the rest of the lesson to explore and create different circuits.

We have enjoyed looking at problem-solving questions in our new maths unit, ‘Converting Units’. We used mathematical thinking to allow us to estimate the length, mass and capacity of different objects.

During our PE sessions with Mr Bullock, we have been practising the skills required when playing tag rugby. We always look forward to a Wednesday PE session!
