Homework Information Evening Reminder

Remember to come along to our homework information evening at 4pm on Wednesday 22nd February at Askrigg School, if you can. We will be explaining changes to our homework expectations / provision and will be on hand to answer your questions. Please don’t worry if you are not able to come: the presentation and multiple resources will be made available to you after the session.

Zones of Regulation

We are delighted to be launching a whole-school approach to self-regulation: supporting children to develop skills in the conscious regulation of their actions. We hope that this, in turn, will lead to increased control and problem solving abilities.

All children will have access to a toolkit, displays, and vocabulary to develop these skills and some children will have a more focussed programme of sessions with a small number of peers. If your child is going to access this package, they will be bringing more information home with them over the next few weeks. If you have any questions at all, please contact me (Miss Harper) directly.

Structure for Next Year

We are delighted to announce that we are able to maintain a very similar structure for next year’s class, albeit with an additional class to support larger numbers taught at Askrigg. Miss Collins, having had a huge impact on our curriculum development over the course of this year, will return to the classroom and we are delighted to be able to keep Miss Telford for another year.

Although we are not in a position to announce which staff are where just yet, the following classes are confirmed:

  • EYFS (nursery and reception) at Bainbridge
  • Y1 at Bainbridge
  • Y2 at West Burton
  • Y3 at West Burton
  • Y4 at Askrigg
  • Y5 at Askrigg
  • Y6 at Askrigg

Term Dates 2023/24

The academic calendar for 2023/24 has been released, for your convenience you can find it here.

Robins

The Robins had a fantastic morning singing their hearts out about love, they followed it up with a penguin drawing session – aren’t they fantastic?!

Owls

In History, the Owls have been learning all about the Great Fire of London this half term. This week, they retold the story using puppets. The children have loved learning about the Great Fire of London. In Geography, the Owls did an experiment this week! They looked at how water vapour condenses to become rain. Some of the children have even had a go at the experiment at home which has been lovely to hear about!

Swallows

The Swallows have had a fantastic trip to Newby Hall to see Gyles Brandreth’s teddy bear collection and the dolls’ house collection. The Swallows were fascinated by the history of the teddy bear and loved finding famous teddy bears such as Paddington, Winnie the Pooh, Rupert Bear and their favourite – Mr Bean’s bear!

Kingfishers

Last week in History, the Kingfishers visited the Dales Countryside Museum. The staff at the museum kindly lent us a box of Roman artefacts and objects for the children to look through. They really enjoyed looking through all the different items and discovering what they were used for. If you are not too squeamish, you might like to ask your child what the ‘sponge on a stick’ was for! In Science, the Kingfishers have been looking for patterns in the way the size of shadows change.

Ask the children some questions about their learning:

What happens when the puppet moves closer to the light source?

What happens if it moves further away?

Why did we use black card to make our puppets?

Why wouldn’t we use a transparent material?

Golden Eagles

The Golden Eagles have been looking at extreme weathers in geography; this week, they were identifying the features of a stratovolcano.

Merlins

In PE, The Merlins headed out to the MUGA and looked at a range of skills for dodgeball! There was a wonderful child-led collective worship delivered by the some of the Merlins this week. The children were very well organised and all knew their responsibilities within the collective worship on perseverance. In English, the Merlins did some reading comprehension work looking at developing their skills for retrieval and inference. Following on from last week the Merlins did some more work on their mixed media landscapes in art, experimenting with different materials to create different effects and textures.
